Position Summary

Thousands of California kids need help in math and you can make all the difference. Offer your time and talent as a tutor and be more for these students in Stockton Unified schools.


As a Math Tutor, you’ll help struggling students in grades 4-8 to improve their skills and get on track with math. With great training and on-site coaching, we’ll prepare you to work with pairs of students to build fundamental math skills and confidence.

We are currently recruiting for the 2020-21 school year. Service will begin in October 2020.


This is an AmeriCorps member position with California Math Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You’ll join an amazing group of California tutors, determined to help students be more.


What to Expect

  • Be a change maker by providing math help to pairs of students during school hours.
  • Be the reason struggling students build their confidence and skills.
  • Be ready to grow by participating in on-site coaching sessions two times per month to review student progress and get feedback.
  • Be impactful by participating in training and ongoing professional development.
  • Be the motivation and represent Math Corps at school-sponsored activities (e.g., family night) to help build awareness of Math Corps.
  • Be an ambassador of the program by sharing your experience with the wider community.

Perks Package

Give your time as a tutor and you’ll receive a scalable perks package based on the time commitment you choose (20 or 35 hours per week).

Perks at Full-Time (35 hours per week)

  • Stipend (paid every two weeks) – $700
  • Up to $3047 for Tuition or Student Loans*
  • Federal Student Loan Forbearance and Interest Repayment
  • Childcare assistance (based on family size and income)


Perks at Part-Time (20 hours per week)

  • Stipend (paid every two weeks) – $400
  • Up to $1612 for Tuition or Student Loans*
  • Federal Student Loan Forbearance and Interest Repayment

*Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child.


What it Takes

You do not need to be a math expert to become a tutor! Great tutors come from all walks of life. Whether you are 18 or 85, the most important qualification is a desire to help children succeed. That said, you also need to meet the following minimum qualifications by the time you begin your service.

  • Are dependable and have a history of good attendance
  • Able to understand and follow instructions
  • Can set a pace and maintain a schedule with students
  • Have basic computer skills (like email and navigating online systems)
  • Can speak, read, and write English fluently
  • 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent
  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States*
  • Have served three or fewer terms with AmeriCorps State or National Program
  • Agree to and successfully complete a background check

*Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.

About our Organization

California Math Corps is an AmeriCorps program that helps children in grades 4-8 improve their math skills each year. Started in 2008, the program has helped more than 20,000 students build foundational skills and get on track with math. Recent evaluation shows Math Corps students are twice as likely to achieve year end benchmarks than their peers without Math Corps. The program is replicated nationally and is currently offered in California, Minnesota, Michigan and Georgia.
